The Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation hopes the Creating Smart and Connected Communities theme will positively engage stakeholders in addressing community needs.

For the first time the Foundation is hosting the corporate philanthropy seminar at the Tokatoka Resort in Nadi on Thursday.

Foundation Executive, Ambalika Devi said they have chosen a different theme because they have observed that there were disparities and disconnection in certain parts of the community.

She added the theme would be focused on the needs of targeted communities like youths and women groups.

Ms Devi said it would help them connect communities to income generating sectors. In the past, she said they had focused on issues such as health, education, technology, social innovation and road to resilience.

She said similar seminars have been held in other divisions over the last nine years with different themes.

The Foundation is expecting the attendance of 80 corporate sector executives and management representatives.

This includes charity organisations, non-government organisations (NGOs) and state sector organisations bestowing social responsibility and community leaders.

Ms Devi said the corporate sector may have financial resources do social good but they lack human resources.

“Projects range from health, environment, education, any project for that matter addresses the pain and suffering of any community,” Ms Devi said.

“The Foundation, in partnership with its charity partners have reached and supported over 3000 communities,” she said.

“Smart communities are creative, innovative, effective, efficient, visionary and connected. These communities are inclusive of all developments.

“These communities multiply and replicate effects of development to other communities and grow together.

“These communities are connected with all relevant stakeholders in the vicinity in which they operate.”

The seminar seeks to share experiences and also engage corporates to do social and economic good collectively.

So far, Ms Devi said previous seminars have benefitted 500 corporate organisations and non-government organisations.
