Bill Snyder's grandson dead at 22; Kansas State releases statement

Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder, right, accepts the trophy after defeating UCLA 35-17 during an NCAA college football Cactus Bowl game, Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2017, in Phoenix.

Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder's 22-year-old grandson has died, according to reports.

The Mercury reports Matthew Snyder, son of Kansas State assistant coach Sean Snyder, died Wednesday.

According to the report, emergency personnel responded to a medical call and police confirmed a death but the cause is unknown.

Kansas State Athletics Director Gene Taylor said in a statement, via The Associated Press, that "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Snyder family during this very difficult time."

The statement said the Snyder family is "greatly appreciative of the outpouring of support displayed by the K-State Family as they cope with this tragedy."

Sean Snyder serves as the Wildcats' associate head coach/special teams coordinator and director of football operations the past seven seasons.

Bill Snyder, 78, announced earlier this month in a brief statement that he was returning for another year with the Wildcats.

"As I have stated many times, as long as I remain in good health, am wanted and have a positive impact on the young people in our program, I will continue to be the head coach at Kansas State," he said earlier this month. "Those factors have not changed, and I look forward to meeting with our players and beginning our out-of-season program when classes resume."

Snyder was diagnosed with throat cancer last offseason and is 210-110-1 since taking over the program in 1988.
