College basketball: Minnesota West men lose 7th place game at nationals

LOCH SHELDRAKE, N.Y. -- The Minnesota West Community and Technical College men's basketball team lost its seventh-place game with Massasoit on Saturday in the NJCAA Division III National Tournament.

LOCH SHELDRAKE, N.Y. -- The Minnesota West Community and Technical College men's basketball team lost its seventh-place game with Massasoit on Saturday in the NJCAA Division III National Tournament.

Massasoit defeated the Bluejays 91-86 at Paul Gerry Fieldhouse.

Ki'Shawn Syph led the Bluejays in scoring with 22 points. Alex Preston added 19 (helped by 4-for-8 3-point shooting). Tyrone Walker scored 15 points and Kuol Chol scored nine.

DeShawn Pickford had three steals, eight assists and six points for the Jays. Syph had 12 rebounds and Walker had eight rebounds and four assists.

Mark Georges with 31, Rael Handy with 21 and Bobby Belezos with 14 paced Massasoit.

Massasoit outscored Minnesota West 50-37 in the first half and, for the game, converted 24 of 33 free throws compared to West's 16-for-24 free throw shooting.

Minnesota West lost its national tournament opener 94-72 to Brookline, the No. 1-ranked Division III team in the country. The Bluejays led Herkimer in their next contest before succumbing to a late rally, falling 78-76.
