On March 10, the FAO Representative Office in the Kyrgyz Republic hosted a meeting of the parties to the CAREC-FAO project "Implementation of the National Biosafety Framework in the Kyrgyz Republic in accordance with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety". The parties discussed some important terms of the agreement signed between CAREC KG and the FAO Representative Office and the support of FAO international experts in the implementation of the tasks of the Biosafety Clearing-House (BCH) and the development of regulatory legal acts on GMO management in Kyrgyzstan.
The main objective of this project is to develop and implement an effective biosafety system that will comply with international standards and ensure the protection of the environment and human health from possible risks associated with genetically modified organisms.
The project aims to strengthen the national legislative and institutional framework, as well as to raise awareness among government agencies and the public on issues of safe handling of biotechnology.
Also during the meeting, issues related to the implementation of the project were discussed:
· Project implementation program, including key stages and deadlines;
· Partnership with other organizations involved in this project;
· Financial reporting templates to help ensure transparency and effective management of project funds;
· Development of technical specifications for the creation of a website within the framework of the project, which will serve as an information platform for participants and interested parties;
· Develop a media plan for 2025 that will aim to inform a wider audience about the goals and achievements of the project, as well as to raise awareness of the importance of biosecurity in the country.
