development day outdoors. Ecole Acadienne de Pomquet, a local school well-known for its outdoor education hosted the conference for 115 teachers, called “Get Outside” or Go. It was a satellite conference for Teachers of Active Physical Health and Education. The skills development conference included sessions on building your backpack, setting up a base camp, making a fire, shelter building, cooking with a dutch oven, mountain biking, orienteering, canoeing and how to lead safe and educative hikes.

One of the teachers at the conference was Denyse DeCoste of the host school, Ecole Acadienne de Pomquet. She says you can be creative in taking what you are teaching in the classroom outdoors.

DeCoste says three key points were presented at the sessions; positivity, ingenuity and resilience.

An Education Professor at St. FX University, Andrew Foran, says there are a number of advantages to taking students outdoors.

Foran says the sessions included ways teachers can adapt programs on school properties that are limited in size.
