American Probation and Parole Association 42nd Training Institute

NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, August 21, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) will hold its 42nd Annual Training Institute at the Marriott Marquis-Times Square, August 27-30 with over 100 engaging sessions including three exciting keynotes. Piper Kerman, the author of the national best-selling memoir Orange Is The New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison (Spiegel & Grau), will be featured at the opening session on Sunday, August 27th. Piper will discuss her personal experiences and the state of criminal justice in America.

During the Monday morning plenary session about Rikers Island, a panel will discuss their findings and recommendations. Featured speakers are Glenn E. Martin, founder and president of JustLeadershipUSA, an organization dedicated to cutting the U.S. correctional population in half by 2030; Rocco Pozzi, Commissioner of Westchester County (NY) Probation Department; and Michael P. Jacobson of CUNY’s Institute for State and Local Government.

On Tuesday, August 29, a special evening session titled Theater of War will feature a cast of actors – Zach Grenier, Melissa Fitzgerald, Glenn Davis, and David Strathairn. Using Sophocles' plays to forge a common vocabulary for openly discussing the impact of war on individuals, families, and communities, the performance is aimed at generating compassion and understanding among diverse audiences. It will be followed by remarks from community panelists and a facilitated town hall discussion.

Another unique session happens on Wednesday morning, August 30 when filmmaker, Jenny Phillips, will show a selection from the film, Beyond the Wall, and talk about how the documentary highlights one of the most critical issues in the national debate over criminal justice reform – the flood of prisoners returning to our communities where they face tremendous obstacles and barriers.

John “Jack” Calhoun will close the event on Wednesday. He has spent his entire career working to improve both the lives of those who live on society’s edges and the fragile families and neighborhoods from which they come. Jack helped found and direct Justice Resource Institute, an organization that pioneered Massachusetts’ pre-trial diversion and restorative justice initiatives.
